Back to School 2012

It’s that time again, when young children’s thoughts turn to readin’, writin’ and ‘rithmetic. They go shopping and get pencils and notebooks and protractors (why again?) and all that fun stuff. Unless they can’t afford it. Kakao is collecting supplies for disadvantaged kids, for DD Resources, a publicly funded agency that provides services to St. Louis City residents who have developmental disabilities. This will help these families better prepare for the school year. We’re looking for the usual school supplies, like crayons Read More...

Ice Cream and…olive oil? And balsamic vinegar?

Talk about peculiar pairings! Some of you remember last summer when Kakao hosted several months’ worth of Peculiar Pairings, when we made confections from ingredients that people don’t usually associate with chocolate. In June we did chocolate and cheese, and in July we did chocolate and beer. In August we made candy with farmers market veggies, and in September we focused on Asian flavors. Peculiar? Positively. Delicious? Definitely. In our first revisit to Peculiar Pairings for 2012, we’re having a special event Read More...

Kakao Ice Cream and Sodas

Just in time for the heat of summer, we at Kakao have just the things to cool you off. First, at Kakao Maplewood, we’re offering ice cream. No, not Kakao ice cream — Serendipity ice cream, made just down the street in Webster Groves. But we’re taking it to the next level by making all our own toppings for the best sundaes you’ll ever have. (While that looks like chocolate syrup — which we certainly do have — that’s actually blackberry Read More...

Kakao Ice Cream Sundaes

We’re starting something new at Kakao Maplewood — Ice Cream! Not just any ice cream. We’re selling Serendipity ice cream, made right down the street in Webster Groves. They’ve won lots of awards, but you’ll figure out right away that they’re ice cream is amazing. They have tons of flavors, but we’re just going to sell plain old Tahitian vanilla bean and old fashioned chocolate. Why plain ice cream? Because we’re going to offer our own toppings for sundaes. Like Kakao Read More...

The Bunnies Are Coming!

Yes, it’s that time of year again. An army of dark chocolate bunnies The World’s Cutest Chocolate Bunnies are back! We’re making as many of these little guys as we can, in milk and dark, available for $12. We’re also taking orders for extra dark, white chocolate, and, of course, Pink Raspberry ($14). That’s our friend Dana (the one on the right), eyeing one of our special Pink Raspberry Bunnies — she’s probably thinking how that white chocolate and all-natural powdered raspberry bunny Read More...

Valentine’s Day Treats!

We’re excited for February 14, because we’ve got some very special treats in store — both Kakao stores, to be specific! We’ve got some beautiful heart boxes for our truffles and caramels, with traditional red with soft plush, and some absolutely gorgeous brown hearts for the non-traditional gal (or guy!) in your life. We’ll have all the traditional truffles, plus some fun new ones, like hibiscus tea, cherry (which happens to also be vegan), and some more, including a special Read More...

Independence Day Tasting – February 14

You read that right. Independence Day will be celebrated on February 14. Some people — mostly couples, I’m guessing — will be celebrating Valentine’s Day that day, but other people will be celebrating their Independence. And we’re going to have a Chocolate Tasting Party at Kakao for them. If you haven’t been to one of our Tasting Parties, and you haven’t heard about them…well, let’s let someone who’s had one tell you about them. These are two comments from our Read More...

Gifts for Needy Kids

Kakao is once again partnering with the St. Louis Office for Developmental Disability Resources, a publicly funded agency that supports community-based services for developmentally disabled people who want to stay in their homes and community. These agencies provide a variety of services ranging from life and job skills coaching to learning how to get along with others. For the next week, both Kakao locations are collecting new, unwrapped gifts for families of the developmentally disabled in the city. We urge you Read More...

Gearing up for Christmas

Now that Thanksgiving 2011 is behind us, we can start thinking about Christmas at Kakao! Truthfully, we’ve been thinking about it for awhile now, getting staffed up to make and serve our chocolates, buying our holiday packaging and preparing our new products. And now we’re ready to start showing them off. One of the special things about Kakao is that we only sell things that we make, or the ingredients we use to make them, like the Traveling Tea we use Read More...

Hostess Gifts for Thanksgiving

Next week is Thanksgiving, and millions of us will show up at a relative or friend’s house to enjoy one of the largest meals we’ll eat all year. Some people will bring flowers, some will bring wine, and the people who really want to be invited back again will arrive bearing gifts of chocolate. We’ve got some great ideas for you to make your hostess (or host!) want to invite you over more often. We can do Kakao gift baskets or Read More...
